About this site

This site is intended to inform about the use of the red cedar species Juniperus Virginiana against domestic pests.

Here are a few examples of common pests  and the problems they cause, and also how to effectively use red cedar wood and red cedar oil against them.

Moth, carpet and fur beetles

Many moths and pests like beetles are nature’s “cleaners”. Their gracing renders holes in clothes made of natural materials such as fur, leather, cotton and wool. Fur and carpet beetles prefer worn or dirty clothes as they hold skin residues. It may be a good idea not to leave worn clothes on the floor. Although carpet and fur beetles prefer natural materials reports show that they also eat synthetic materials.

Place the red cedar in the bottom of your laundry basket as a precausionary measure.

Hang red cedar rings on your hangers.

Do-it-yourself moth trap: Tape a few inches of card board and simpl place where you suspect they may be, this way you can easily find their
“favorite hiding”. Read more on DIY Moth Trap.

Larder and  flour beetles

In the kitchen it is recommended that you place red cedar, combined with red cedar oil in cabinets and pantry, preferably even under bench cupboards and do’nt forget the cupboards under the sink. Start by cleaning your home, using microfiber fabric. Read more on cleaning.

For starters it’s recommended to sweep the floor well and often (daily, if possible) in order to sweep away as many beetles and other moth pests as possible. Don’t forget to rinse the mop or sweep after use! Vacuuming isn’t a complete solution as you need to empty the vacuum cleaner immediately afterwards. This as the beetles simply continue to multiply in your vacuum cleaner bag. Read more on vacuuming.

Use red cedar chippings in the bathroom placed in a pretty bowl.

Don’t forget to keep attending your home even after you got rid of your pests!

Read more on Prevention.
